Gaming portals blocking external links in Flash games




This message is addressed to all the Flash games developers out there

During the past few months, the number of gaming portals that are publishing games from other developers (including us) and blocking in-game external links, has increased considerably. While we understand that some games abuse back links and trick players into clicking them, this is not the case with most of the developers. So, generalizing this as a penalty for everyone is not fair.

They are making profit using our games and we, the developers, get nothing in return. Back links are our only means to monetize our work.

We are starting this campaign with the hope that every gaming portal owner will realize that it has to give something back to the developers and enable back links in our games.

Link blocking detection script

In order to stop these publishers we are sharing a script with you that can check if a portal is blocking external links (back links).

Basically what this component does is check the allowNetworking parameter inside the host page. If external links are blocked, a customizable message will be displayed.

Other actions to be taken:

  • block their URLs in your AdSense accounts: Allow & block ads > Advertiser URLs (some of them buy inexpensive ads, targeting our gaming portals)
  • contact them and ask them to enable your links
  • contribute to the block list by using the form below
  • spread the word to other developers!
